Read a moving picture, not one body part
A wagging tail does not always mean a dog wants contact. A purring cat is not automatically comfortable. Ears held back, a turned head, a lowered body, stillness, a paw lift, a tail movement, or a vocal sound can occur in more than one situation.
Body language is a stream of information. To use it responsibly, observe:
- The whole body: posture, muscle tension, balance, movement, face, ears, eyes, mouth, tail, coat, breathing, vocalization, and activity.
- The immediate context: who and what are present, distance, available exits, resources, handling, sounds, novelty, and recent events.
- The sequence: what changed first, what followed, and what the other person or animal did next.
- The intensity and trend: loose or rigid, brief or sustained, decreasing or escalating.
- Recovery: whether the animal returns to ordinary activity after space is created or remains altered.
The goal is not to announce, “I know exactly what this pet feels.” It is to notice change early enough to make the situation safer and more comfortable.
Separate observation from interpretation
Write what a camera could capture before assigning meaning.
Observation: “The dog stopped eating, became still, turned the head away, closed the mouth, and showed the whites of the eyes when the child moved within two feet of the bowl.”
Interpretation: “The dog may need more distance and protection from approach during meals.”
Unsafe certainty: “The dog is guilty,” “jealous,” “dominant,” or “about to attack.”
For a cat:
Observation: “The cat’s tail began moving sharply, the ears rotated sideways, the back skin rippled, and the cat turned toward the hand after several strokes.”
Interpretation: “The interaction may be becoming uncomfortable or too intense; stop touching and allow the cat to leave.”
Unsafe certainty: “The cat suddenly became mean for no reason.”
Interpretation is sometimes useful, but it should remain a hypothesis. The immediate response often does not require certainty. If an animal disengages, freezes, stiffens, hides, retreats, growls, hisses, or shows conflicting signals, pause and create space.
Establish the individual animal’s ordinary baseline
Body shape and movement differ by species, breed, age, coat, tail and ear anatomy, disability, health, environment, and individual history. A naturally short tail cannot display the same range as a long tail. A dog with upright ears and a dog with heavy drop ears look different. Long fur can obscure muscle tension. Arthritis may alter posture. Vision or hearing loss may change orientation and startle responses.
Observe the pet during familiar low-pressure activities:
- resting undisturbed
- approaching a trusted adult voluntarily
- eating and drinking normally
- exploring a familiar room
- engaging in preferred play
- moving through normal transitions
- choosing to end interaction
Record what loose movement, ordinary breathing, preferred distance, normal tail carriage, comfortable facial muscles, and typical recovery look like for this individual.
A baseline is not a guarantee. It makes change easier to notice. If the animal’s posture, movement, social behavior, appetite, elimination, sleep, or tolerance changes suddenly or markedly, contact the veterinarian rather than assuming the issue is purely behavioral.
Observe posture, weight, movement, and muscle tension
Begin with the animal’s overall shape.
A dog or cat may stand tall, lower the body, crouch, lean, shift weight backward, stretch forward while keeping the feet ready to retreat, freeze, pace, flee, hide, or move with loose curves. Look for whether the movement remains fluid or becomes rigid and economical.
AAHA’s canine and feline behavior guidance lists nonspecific distress observations including lowered posture, trembling, rigidity, freezing, pacing, hiding, escape attempts, turning away, scanning, hypervigilance, and altered closeness. These signs do not diagnose one condition, but they are reasons to reduce pressure and assess context.
Stillness deserves particular care. A motionless animal is not necessarily calm or consenting. Freezing can be an early point at which an adult should stop approach, touch, restraint, or social pressure.
Do not force the animal to move to “see what happens.” Preserve an exit and reduce the trigger. If movement appears painful, uncoordinated, weak, or abruptly abnormal, seek veterinary guidance.
Read the face as a group of changing features
Observe the eyes, brow, muzzle, whiskers, mouth, tongue, ears, and head position together.
For dogs, changes can include a closed mouth after relaxed panting, tension around the muzzle, lip or nose licking, yawning outside a sleepy context, turning the head, avoiding or fixing the gaze, showing more white around the eye, pulling the ears back, or holding the head and neck lower. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior’s canine body-language explanation emphasizes combining facial expression, tail, posture, and situation rather than relying on one part.
For cats, AAHA and AAFP’s feline life-stage guidance describes fear or stress as potentially involving a tense lowered position, crouching, freezing or fleeing, ears rotated sideways or back, pupil dilation, changed whisker position, and defensive vocalization.
Pupil size alone is especially unreliable as a translation. Light, arousal, medication, health, and attention can affect it. A direct stare can also have different significance depending on distance, familiarity, and the rest of the body.
If facial features and posture conflict, choose the lower-risk response: stop reaching, turn slightly away, reduce intensity, and allow distance.
Treat ears and tails as parts of a larger system
Tail movement is movement, not a universal statement of friendliness. Observe height, speed, breadth, stiffness, base tension, and what the rest of the animal is doing.
A dog may wag while approaching, avoiding, becoming highly aroused, or holding the rest of the body stiff. A cat’s tail may be upright during a social approach, wrapped near the body, tucked, puffed, held low, or moving with increasing force during an interaction. None should be interpreted in isolation.
Ear direction can show where attention is oriented and may change with arousal or tension. But ear anatomy, cropping, injury, and voluntary movement limit comparisons. Read both ears with the face, weight distribution, movement, distance, and context.
Never test a tail or ear interpretation by reaching toward the animal. Let the next information come from the animal’s voluntary movement while an adult maintains safety.
Include sound, breathing, eating, grooming, and elimination
Communication is not only visual. Note barking, whining, growling, hissing, yowling, meowing, purring, or an unusual absence of normal sound. Also note panting, respiratory change, salivation, trembling, appetite, drinking, grooming, litter-box use, urination, stool, sleep, and activity.
These changes can relate to environment, learning, fear, frustration, pain, illness, or several factors together. A growl or hiss provides useful warning information; punishment may suppress the signal without making the situation safe. Purring can occur in more than one context and should not overrule tense posture, illness signs, withdrawal, or pain concern.
Breathing difficulty, collapse, unresponsiveness, sudden paralysis, serious trauma, or rapid deterioration requires emergency veterinary contact. Use When Does a Pet Need Urgent or Emergency Veterinary Attention? rather than continuing observation.
Observe distance and choice
One of the clearest practical questions is: “What does the animal do when given a safe choice?”
An animal may approach, pause, arc away, turn the head, increase distance, move behind a barrier, climb to a protected location, enter a carrier or bed, hide, solicit interaction, or return after a pause.
Cat Friendly Homes recommends paying attention when a cat walks away and not chasing or insisting on interaction. Its calm-cat guidance also highlights stillness, tail-tip movement, lowered ears, and skin rippling as possible signs to stop prolonged petting.
Respecting withdrawal is not “letting the pet win.” It prevents escalation and builds predictability. Do not block the exit, pull the animal from a safe place, continue petting after tension appears, or call a child over to prove the pet is friendly.
Necessary veterinary or husbandry care may limit choice temporarily, but it still requires advance preparation, the least stressful safe method, appropriate adult skill, and veterinary guidance. Choice during casual social contact is not the same question as medically necessary treatment.
Watch the sequence around a trigger
A useful record begins before the obvious reaction.
For example:
- A visitor enters and looks directly at the dog.
- The dog stops moving and closes the mouth.
- The visitor reaches over the head.
- The dog turns away, licks the lips, and shifts backward.
- The visitor follows.
- The dog growls.
Calling the last step “a random growl” erases the sequence. The safer intervention was available earlier: increase distance, stop reaching, use a barrier, and let the dog disengage.
For a cat:
- The cat approaches and rubs once.
- The person begins repeated full-body strokes.
- The tail movement intensifies and the ears rotate.
- The cat becomes still and turns toward the hand.
- Touch continues.
- The cat swats and leaves.
An approach did not grant unlimited permission for every kind or duration of touch. Respond to changes during the interaction.
Use recovery to judge whether pressure has truly decreased
After the trigger stops or distance increases, observe what happens next. Does the animal resume exploring, resting, eating, playing, grooming, or interacting normally? Or does the animal remain frozen, hidden, vigilant, panting, pacing, unable to eat, or unusually reactive?
Recovery varies by individual and situation, so do not impose a universal number of minutes. Slow or incomplete recovery is useful information to share with the veterinarian or behavior professional. Repeated exposure before recovery may increase distress.
Do not lure an animal back into contact solely to prove recovery. Provide resources and allow voluntary re-engagement.
Make the safest response when signals conflict
Mixed information is normal. A pet may approach while keeping the body low, take food while remaining tense, wag while stiff, purr while withdrawing, or seek proximity without wanting touch.
When signals conflict:
- pause movement and touch
- turn the body slightly rather than looming
- increase distance or add a secure barrier
- reduce noise, crowding, and direct attention
- let the animal choose whether to re-engage
- protect food, resting areas, hiding places, and exits
- move children away calmly under adult direction
- record what occurred without provoking another test
Do not punish the signal. AVSAB’s current humane dog training statement supports reward-based methods and management rather than aversive tools and physical or psychological punishment.
Give children a simpler safety rule
Young children cannot reliably interpret subtle dog or cat communication. The AVMA’s dog-bite prevention guidance assigns responsible adults the supervision role and advises respecting dogs’ personal space.
Teach a rule that does not require expert interpretation:
If the pet moves away, becomes still, hides, growls, hisses, or looks different, stop and get an adult.
Adults must still remain close enough to intervene. Supervision is active when the adult is attentive, understands the plan, can reach the interaction immediately, and ends it early. A child should not follow an animal into a bed, crate, carrier, hiding place, food area, or narrow space.

Record behavior for professional help
When a pattern is concerning, record:
- date, time, place, people, and animals present
- what happened immediately before, during, and after
- exact posture, movement, sound, distance, and duration
- food, sleep, elimination, medication, pain, or health changes
- what management was used
- how quickly and fully the animal recovered
- video from a fixed safe position only when it does not prolong risk
Do not edit the record into a theory. A veterinarian needs the health context; a qualified behavior professional needs the observable sequence and environment.
Contact the veterinarian for sudden change, possible pain, illness signs, altered appetite or elimination, neurologic change, self-injury, or a behavior pattern that is new or escalating. Seek qualified behavior help for bite or scratch risk, persistent fear, guarding, conflict, unsafe handling, inability to recover, or household management that is failing.

Use a five-line observation method
For everyday learning, write:
- Context: Where, when, who, what resource, and what happened just before?
- Whole body: What did posture, movement, face, ears, eyes, mouth, tail, sound, and activity do?
- Sequence: Which change appeared first, and what followed?
- Response: What space, barrier, pause, or support did the adult provide?
- Recovery: What did the animal do afterward, and did normal behavior return?
This method does not translate the animal perfectly. It produces a more honest record, catches early changes, and supports a safer response than a list of fixed signal meanings.
